Pinterest – Social Networking + Similar Interests

All social networking sites are based on the underlying concept of sharing. Twitter lets you share text while Facebook lets you share images and video as well. Many other sites have sprouted up with the same concept but different names and terminology. Are they all promising, will they ever take-off or will they vanish even before we could notice them?

Amidst these new sites, some of them have imposed the idea of ‘similar interests’ to make the sharing worth. That means, you share only what you’d like to and you’ll receive only what you’d choose to. So for those of you who’re tired of  Facebook, twitter and would want to try exploring other sites, here’s one which seems promising – PINTEREST

Pinterest.com is yet another social networking site with the idea of sharing similar interests. Right now only users with invitations can use it and getting an invite shouldn’t be tough. I got mine in two days.

The moment you sign up, you get to create your own pinboard (similar to a wall on facebook) where you can dedicate one board each to an interest  – Photography, Food, Books, Fashion, Films, Technology etc. Next, you get to add ‘pins’. Pins are nothing much but images which represent something you would want to share – could be a click at the previous night’s party, an interesting find, your favorite book, recipe, anything!

You could add pins by uploading images from your collection or sharing the ones you find on the net (with due credit to the source). Every pin gets likes, comments and repins (shares). And for Firefox users, an added advantage is the ‘Pin It’ button which you can drag and post on your bookmarks toolbar. It helps you pin stuff as  you find them while browsing.

The layout of the site is quite interesting and simple. It divides the screen into four columns, each having around an average of 10 pins which gives you an experience of looking at 40 varied objects of your interests on a notice board! And according to me, it is a good break from the routine feeds of FB/Tweets.

Google’s schemer is also based on similar lines where you get to create schemes (which are nothing but things you’d like to do) and people the world over who want to be a part of it, join you. And the schemes are classified into categories like Travel, Music, Photography, Fashion etc. which is very much the concept of ‘sharing similar interests’.

The biggest advantage of being on these sites is that they’re less crowded, so you get to know some real awesome people – those few lucky ones who got their invitations!
