AT&T Will Unlock Off-Contract iPhone Starting This Sunday

Unlock Off-Contract iPhoneDamn fed up with an Locked iPhone then this Sunday is a lucky one for you :)  AT&T has announced it will begin unlocking customers’ iPhones once their 2-year contracts have expired.  AT&T will Unlock Off-Contract iPhone at customers’ request this Sunday.

Now, customers who wish to use AT&T’s network can purchase an iPhone at a subsidized price and have it unlocked after their contract term is up, rather than purchase an unlocked phone at full price directly from Apple.

You will have the option to unlock your iPhone remotely or you can also get this work done by visiting AT&T retail store.

An unlocked iPhone has the ability to be used on any GSM network that meets the iPhone’s wireless specifications, such as T-Mobile’s EDGE network in the US. Once unlocked, however, iPhone owners will be able to purchase a different SIM card and use their phones on any compatible network around the world, including T-Mobile in the United States. They will not, however, be able to use their phones on Verizon’s network, since the two networks use incompatible technology.

Unlock Off-Contract iPhone

According to the statement of AT&T , this could be your lucky Sunday if you’re an out of contract iPhone owner.

Beginning Sunday, April 8, we will offer qualifying customers the ability to unlock their AT&T iPhones. The only requirements are that a customer’s account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies or paid an early termination fee.

For all other phones on AT&T’s network, an 80-day period of service is the only requirement, after which those phones have the option of being unlocked. The iPhone has always been an exception — due likely to the higher prices carriers must pay for that device, and its tremendous resale value.

AT&T’s decision to change its policy on unlock off-contract iPhone reportedly comes after mounting complaints from customers and pressure from Apple. I’d say this is a nice move on AT&T’s part, but it should have been doing this years ago.

Here is another fun fact: If you have paid the no-commitment price, AT&T will unlock your phone too. Chalk this up as a win for anyone with a GSM iPhone.
